Endoscopic Variceal Band Ligation (EVL)
EVL – Complete Overview
Endoscopic Variceal Band Ligation (EVL) is a life-saving therapeutic endoscopic procedure used to treat enlarged veins (varices) in the esophagus, most commonly caused by liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension. EVL helps prevent or control life-threatening gastrointestinal bleeding.
Why EVL is Performed
EVL is recommended in patients with:
- Esophageal varices due to liver cirrhosis
- Active upper GI bleeding
- Portal hypertension
- Prevention of recurrent variceal bleeding
Procedure Details
During EVL, an endoscope fitted with a special banding device is passed through the mouth. Rubber bands are applied to the varices, cutting off blood flow, causing them to shrink and eventually fall off safely.
Preparation
- Fasting for 6–8 hours before procedure
- Blood tests if advised
- Temporary adjustment of certain medications
Safety & Recovery
- Safe and effective procedure
- Mild throat discomfort may occur
- Patients usually discharged the same or next day
Regular follow-up and repeat EVL sessions may be required to completely eradicate varices and reduce bleeding risk.
